During the Essex Year of Opportunity, Essex County Council are investing £1.3 million to help people upskill and explore career paths.
This builds on the success of the Essex Year of Numbers (2024 to 2025) and the Essex Year of Reading (2023 to 2024).
The Essex Year of Numbers
The Essex Year of Numbers aimed to inspire a love of learning, focusing on numeracy skills. The campaign shared resources to help people of all ages become confident in their maths skills.
Exciting events included:
- helping primary school children set up their own Eco Refill shops
- numeracy tips from celebrity maths expert Bobby Seagull
- the Everyday Magic of Numbers series, taking a look at how we use numbers every day, which included videos from poets and zookeepers

The Essex Year of Reading
The Essex Year of Reading helped children, young people and adults build a lifelong love of reading. During the campaign, exciting events included:
- organising author visits to local schools. Including TV presenter and children’s author Dermot O’Leary and classic author Michael Rosen.
- book swap stalls in schools for children to access new books
- storytelling and poetry competitions, with entries from residents aged 4 – 87
